Blown-In Insulation for the Attic and Roof

There are countless do-it-yourself (DIY) projects that the average homeowner can feel confident about undertaking. There are also a good many projects that should simply be left to the experts. Blown-in insulation is one of those projects – whether it’s removal, installation, or both. Blown-in insulation is not for the uninitiated, no matter how keen the homeowner. Just an example, if attic insulation requires removal, there’s probably something wrong up there – and that will certainly require some expertise. This is work that entails product knowledge and installation know-how.

To begin with, insulation removal (in the attic) should be advised and recommended by someone who knows. And the fact is, removal is not always necessary or recommended. However, attic insulation that has been rodent-infested (or insect-infested) may be dangerous – it will have to be removed. As well, there may be residual asbestos in the attic, depending on the age of the home. Here, it’s the experts who know how to properly prepare the worksite, protect the workers and occupants, and dispose of the waste appropriately. This is very risky work for the inexperienced.

As for installation, a well-insulated attic and roof cavity can dramatically reduce monthly utility bills. And for most homes in Canada, there is room for improvement. This is especially relevant in older homes, where the insulation may already be ineffective. And where conditions are right, the blown-in insulation option is ideal for the attic and all of the “awkward” spaces that are present. With an expert install, a number of benefits are accomplished: thermal resistance (R-Value) is enhanced; air movement is better controlled; and unwanted moisture is stopped from collecting.

In the attic, and in most parts of a residential home, insulation should prevent unwanted air movement and moisture collection. Both will compromise the effectiveness of an insulated space, and both must be properly addressed. With blown-in insulation (cellulose or fiberglass product) coverage is satisfactory, and the entire attic space is well blanketed:  the wooden crossbeams; the plumbing and piping; and all of the electrical wiring and cables.  For the professional installer, it’s a way of ensuring an “insulated envelope”, and providing all of the money-saving benefits.

Inasmuch as blown in insulation is effective and affordable, this is installation work best left to the professionals. And a good contractor will offer the full service:  in-depth product knowledge; technical and mechanical expertise; and, of course, dependable service. The most important for the contractor is to ensure product performance for the homeowner, and this means installing the best quality product, along with a high quality installation. It sets the stage for enhanced home comfort in the short term, and significant seasonal cost savings for many years to come.

Whatever the scope of work, attic insulation is worth doing right the first time. And whatever the budget, it’s key not to cut corners or take shortcuts. Simply put, a well-insulated attic and roof will deliver cost savings that will quickly offset the original project investment - and that always makes for good value.
